Rabbit Love : Paula Abdul 8:41 AM

.......................

Paula Abdul (born June 19, 1962) is a popular American singer, choreographer, dancer and actress. In the 1980s, her career rose rapidly, from being a cheerleader for the Los Angeles Lakers to being a sought-after choreographer at the height of the music video era, then to being a pop music singer with a string of top hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s. After that she suffered a series of reverses in her professional and personal life, until she found renewed fame and success in the 2000s as a judge on the highly rated television series American Idol.

Abdul began dance lessons around the age of eight and showed a natural talent for it. She attended Van Nuys High School where she was on the cheerleading squad, played flute in the band, and was an honors student. At 15, she received a scholarship to a dance camp near Palm Springs, where she learned that her long-legged teachers stayed lithe by binging and purging their food. Abdul, who was extremely self-conscious about her weight, had been taught this by her much taller fellow ballerinas, and which she herself began at 16 after dining with fellow cheerleaders.[citation needed]

Abdul enrolled at California State University at Northridge to study broadcasting. In her freshman year, she tried out for the Los Angeles Lakers' famed Laker Girls squad, and was selected from a pool of 700. Within three weeks she was made head choreographer. She quit school six months later

HEAD OVER HEELS brings Paula up to date, to pop's new sleek and sassy edge--the bouncy hip-hop of TLC and Salt 'N Pepa, the sex grooves of Janet Jackson, even a bit of post-modern cut and paste. And then it bounces right on past andreintroduces the sitar to commercial pop. In "My Love Is For Real," which matches an uncharacteristically sultry-voiced Abdul with a Prince-like melody and a haunting Middle-Eastern presence, an acoustic sitar presages the arrival of Yemenite singer Ofra Haza; and an electric sitar kicks off "Under The Influence" in an unmistakable tribute to mid-'60s Beatles.

But wherever HEAD OVER HEELS goes--Motown soul, light rap, Latin pop ("Love Don't Come Easy" is a happy version of Barry Manilow's "Copacabana")--it always comes back to the undeniable pop hooks that Abdul and her producers have always delivered. There are surprisingly few ballads here--"Missing You," is the first one--but a plethora of potential dance anthems. "If I Were Your Girl" is the biggest highlight of the CD in my opinion, a stirring ballad with a commanding vocal performance by Abdul.

In the remote sands of the Moroccan desert, a rifle shot rings out--detonating a chain of events that will link an American tourist couple’s frantic struggle to survive, two Moroccan boys involved in an accidental crime, a nanny illegally crossing into Mexico with two American children and a Japanese teen rebel whose father is sought by the police in Tokyo. Separated by clashing cultures and sprawling distances, each of these four disparate groups of people are nevertheless hurtling towards a shared destiny of isolation and grief. In the course of just a few days, they will each face the dizzying sensation of becoming profoundly lost--lost in the desert, lost to the world, lost to themselves--as they are pushed to the farthest edges of confusion and fear as well as to the very depths of connection and love.

Belle & Sebastian are a Scottish indie pop band formed in Glasgow in January 1996. After releasing a number of albums and EPs on Jeepster Records, they are now signed to Rough Trade Records in the United Kingdom and Matador Records in the United States.

While their early sound was commonly filed under "twee pop", a description the band have rejected, Belle & Sebastian have much in common with influential indie bands such as The Smiths and Felt, and also take in other influences, such as northern soul and funk, as well as a sense of irony and humour, that are not usually associated with twee. Audiogalaxy classified Belle & Sebastian music as chamber pop, as they used instruments not very common in pop such as flute, cello or trumpet.

Dear Catastrophe Waitress is an album by Belle & Sebastian, a Scottish indie pop group, released in 2003 on Rough Trade Records. Producer Trevor Horn, former member of The Buggles and producer of groups like Yes and Frankie Goes to Hollywood, oversaw the production of the album, and gave it a more polished, pop-friendly sound. This stood in sharp contrast with their previous lo-fi, folky albums (although songs like "Lord Anthony" hearkened back to their old sound.) In particular, the danceable, New Order-esque track "Stay Loose" proved to be the first in a series of songs (such as "Your Cover's Blown" and "Sukie in the Graveyard") that further diverged from their roots. Although this move alienated a few fans, the album was generally considered their best work since If You're Feeling Sinister by critics and was embraced by the majority of their fanbase.

The album was nominated for the 2004 Mercury Music Prize, while the song "Step into My Office, Baby" was shortlisted for an Ivor Novello Award in the Best Song category. Neither won.

1. "Step into My Office, Baby" – 4:12

Movies : Triology : Lord Of The Rings 2:18 PM

.......................

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring An ancient Ring thought lost for centuries has been found, and through a strange twist in fate has been given to a small Hobbit named Frodo. When Gandalf discovers the Ring is in fact the One Ring of the Dark Lord Sauron, Frodo must make an epic quest to the Cracks of Doom in order to destroy it! However he does not go alone. He is joined by Gandalf, Legolas the elf, Gimli the Dwarf, Aragorn, Boromir and his three Hobbit friends Merry, Pippin and Samwise. Through mountains, snow, darkness, forests, rivers and plains, facing evil and danger at every corner the Fellowship of the Ring must go. Their quest to destroy the One Ring is the only hope for the end of the Dark Lords reign!

The Lord of the Rings: The Two TowersThe Fellowship has been broken. Boromir is dead, Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee have gone to Mordor alone to destroy the One Ring, Merry and Pippin have been captured by the Uruk-hai, and Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli have made friends of the Rohan, a race of humans that are in the path of the upcoming war, led by its aging king, Théoden. The two towers between Mordor and Isengard, Barad-dúr and Orthanc, have united in their lust for destruction. The corrupt wizard Saruman, under the power of the Dark Lord Sauron, and his slimy assistant, Gríma Wormtongue, have created a grand Uruk-hai army bent on the destruction of Man and Middle-earth. The rebellion against Sauron is building up and will be led by Gandalf the White, who was thought to be dead after the Balrog captured him. One of the Ring's original bearers, the creature Gollum, has tracked Frodo and Sam down in search of his 'precious', but is captured by the Hobbits and used as a way to lead them to Mt. Doom. The War of the Ring has now begun...

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the KingThe War of the Ring reaches its climax as the dark lord Sauron sets his sights on Minas Tirith, the capital of Gondor. The members of the fellowship in Rohan are warned of the impending attack when Pippin cannot resist looking into Saruman's palantir and is briefly contacted by the dark lord. King Theoden is too proud to send his men to help without being asked, so Gandalf and Pippin ride to Minas Tirith to see that this request is sent. They meet opposition there from Denethor, steward of the city and father of Faramir and the late Boromir. Denethor's family has acted as temporary guardians of Gondor for centuries until a member of the true line of kings returns. This member is none other than Aragorn, who must overcome his own self-doubt before he can take on the role he was destined to fulfill. Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam continue to carry the One Ring towards Mordor, guided by Gollum. What they don't know is that Gollum is leading them into a trap so that he can reclaim the Ring for himself. Though Sam suspects his deceit, Frodo is starting to be corrupted by the Ring's power and the mistrust of Sam this causes is fully exploited by Gollum. The only way good can prevail in this contest is if the Ring is destroyed, an event that is becoming harder every minute for Frodo to achieve. The fate of every living creature in Middle Earth will be decided once and for all as the Quest of the Ringbearer reaches its climax.

And I am telling you , I'm not going 1:39 AM

"And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" is the name of a song written by Tom Eyen and Henry Krieger. It is featured in the musical Dreamgirls, in which it is sung by the character Effie White. The song is often considered the show's signature tune. The lyrics describe Effie's love, both strongly devoted and defiant. She refuses to let her man leave her behind. She boldly proclaims to him, "I'm staying and ... you're gonna love me."

In 2001, Rosabel remixed the song and released their version (credited as Rosabel with Jennifer Holliday) as a single. It performed well on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart. In 2004, Star Search winner Tiffany Evans recorded the song for her debut. On the 2006 TV contest America's Got Talent, eventual winner Bianca Ryan sang this song as her audition. The song is also on Ryan's debut album. The song was recorded in 2006 by Jennifer Hudson for use in the DreamWorks/Paramaount Dreamgirls motion picture adaptation

Lyrics by TOM EYEN
Music by HENRY KRIEGER

And I am telling you
I'm not going.
You're the best man I'll ever know.
There's no way I can ever go,
No, no, no, no way,
No, no, no, no way I'm livin' without you.
I'm not livin' without you.
I don't want to be free.
I'm stayin',
I'm stayin',
And you, and you, you're gonna love me.
Ooh, you're gonna love me.

And I am telling you
I'm not going,
Even though the rough times are showing.
There's just no way,
There's no way.
We're part of the same place.
We're part of the same time.
We both share the same blood.
We both have the same mind.
And time and time we have so much to share,

No, no, no,
No, no, no,
I'm not wakin' up tomorrow mornin'
And findin' that there's nobody there.
Darling, there's no way,
No, no, no, no way I'm livin' without you.
I'm not livin' without you.
You see, there's just no way,
There's no way.

Tear down the mountains,
Yell, scream and shout.
You can say what you want,
I'm not walkin' out.
Stop all the rivers,
Push, strike, and kill.
I'm not gonna leave you,
There's no way I will.

And I am telling you
I'm not going.
You're the best man I'll ever know.
There's no way I can ever, ever go,
No, no, no, no way,
No, no, no, no way I'm livin' without you.
Oh, I'm not livin' without you,
I'm not livin' without you.
I don't wanna be free.
I'm stayin',
I'm stayin',
And you, and you,
You're gonna love me.
Oh, hey, you're gonna love me,
Yes, ah, ooh, ooh, love me,
Ooh, ooh, ooh, love me,
Love me,
Love me,
Love me,
Love me.
You're gonna love me.

JENNIFER HUDSON
Just about every Broadway musical worth its bugle beads has that one signature tune. The one that brings down the house. The one that eventually drones in doctors' offices. The one that you know the name of, or the words to, even if you don't know what show it came from.

Then there is And I Am Telling You (I'm Not Going) from Dreamgirls.

Much as when musical whiz kid Michael Bennett staged the Act 1 closer on Broadway back in 1981, the movie version (which expands to 800 screens Monday) of the glitzy showbiz opera about a '60s girl group has its seminal spellbinding moment. The volcanic Effie, dismissed by her soul sisters and Curtis, the man she adores, pleads and wails in protest before she ultimately faces the audience alone and dares them not to love her.

Love her, they do. Even movie audiences regularly break into applause.

"It's so rare to see someone rip their heart out and bang it against the stage," says Paul Wontorek, editor in chief of Broadway.com. "To drop someone all alone on center stage like that shows the genius of Michael Bennett's staging."

On opening night a quarter century ago, then-21-year-old Jennifer Holliday became a theatrical legend, a gay icon of triumph over adversity and, like Effie, often a victim of her own unique gifts, demanding nature and immense presence.

Today, her one-of-a-kind performance continues to haunt: A famous clip from the 1982 Tony Awards broadcast on YouTube that captures all 8½ minutes of Holliday in her stomping Godzilla-like glory has been watched more than 340,000 times since it was posted in February.

"Theater people have always held onto that Tony Awards performance," says Wontorek of the never-equaled live sequence that has been regularly shown in gay bars for years. "Everyone obsesses over that broadcast. They've passed along copies from generation to generation."

And now another Jennifer, American Idol castoff Jennifer Hudson, is on the brink of similar success as she redefines Effie, Hollywood-style.

"I never met anyone who didn't love that song," says Hudson, 25, who first heard it when Will Smith lip-synched along to Holliday on his '90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and has since performed it herself several times.

But not as an actress navigating through And I Am Telling You's tricky hills and valleys. Hudson gets what other singers, who try to blast their way through the volatile ode, don't: "It's not about the vocal gymnastics, but the emotion."

Like athletes attempting the Ironman Triathlon, those with a similar octave range as Hudson and Holliday can't resist the challenge to stretch their vocal muscles. "I know a lot of talented singers who are frustrated they aren't overweight black women," Wontorek says.

Recent attempts that are found on YouTube include American Idol contestants Frenchie Davis and Tamyra Gray as well as Bianca Ryan, the 11-year-old winner of TV's America's Got Talent.

Jennifer Holiday, 1982 Tony Awards
In 1982, Jennifer Holliday, the actress who portrayed Effie in the original Broadway production, released the song as a single. It was her first single release and it met with great success, topping the Billboard R&B charts and attaining top forty positions on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. In 1983, Holliday won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female for the single.

Rabbit Loves : DIVING WITH ANDY 11:41 PM

Between London and Paris, the band sought after atmospheres and arrangements by turns intimate and sophisticated. Influenced by several years studying sound engineering at the national school of music in Paris, Rémy and Juliens music oscillates between the subtlety of crafted classical arrangements and an instinctive and spontaneous approach to working sessions in recording studios. Minimalist drums give way to tense harmonies of guitars, and breathtaking strings echo the sweet and melancholic voice of Juliette.

In July 2004 the members of Diving with Andy got together at ICP Studios in Brussels to finalize and mix the 11 pieces of their first LP. Without difficulty the band signed with the French record label Dièse, which gave them the opportunity to have their LP distributed by Harmonia Mundi. Soon after the band supported Tahiti 80 in Paris (November 2005) and played at Les Bars en Trans in Rennes (December 2005). Between Paris and London, Diving with Andy is like a British melody with a French accent, and a French song with a British accent

Movies : Madagascar 5:11 AM

This movie focuses on four residents and "stars" of the Central Park Zoo in New York City who are also best friends: a lion (Stiller), a zebra (Rock), a giraffe (Schwimmer) and a pregnant hippo (Smith). When one of them goes missing, the other three break out of the zoo looking for him, and eventually all four are captured and put in boxes to ship them back to the continent their species are originally from: Africa.

An accident at sea, however, strands them on the shore of Madagascar. Having had humans take care of them their entire life, the four know nothing of surviving in the wild, or that one of them, the lion, is genetically predisposed to eat his three best friends. Exploring their surroundings, the four friends soon meet the Malagasy locals (a type of lemur given to having loud "rave-like" dance parties) and their carnivorous enemies, the fousas. As the two sides try to use these four new, strange (and large) friends to their benefit, our heroes are also confronted with the reality of their predestined roles in nature.

Composer: Hans Zimmer. Recording information: Air Lyndhurst, London, England. Soundtracks to animated films generally give composers a chance to indulge their more whimsical side. Such is the case with MADAGASCAR, a movie whose plot revolves around four animals breaking out of the Central Park Zoo and mistakenly ending up in the wilds of Madagascar. Hans Zimmer is the principal composer for the score, though he only ends up flying solo on a pair of tunes--a lush, straightforward remake of "Born Free," and "Zoosters Breakout," a piece dominated by darting string sections and the occasional brass splash.

Zimmer is joined by James S. Levine on "Beacon of Liberty," with its mix of orchestral fanfare and a chugging bass line. Joined by Heitor Pereira and Ryeland Allison on "Friends," Zimmer and Levine come up with a whimsical theme that incorporates carefree whistling, a hint of ukulele, and a happy-go-lucky cadence. Familiar old tunes by the Ventures, the Bee Gees, and Earth, Wind & Fire are on hand, but pride of place goes to the hilarious remake of the Reel 2 Reel dance smash "I Like to Move It," rendered by Sacha Baron Cohen (AKA Ali G) in character as King Julian the Lemur.

I LIKED THIS SCENE ' THAT THE LEMUR DANCE !!! FELT LIKE I WENT THE 70 'S BAR , LUNG SUAN , THE SHORT , SISSY , DRESSFUL , YOUNG GAY GUYS DANCE THERE HAHAHAHA !!!

Teenage television actress Vanessa Hudgens was best known for her role as Gabriella Montez in the highly popular Disney TV film HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL when this 2006 album was released. It charted high based on the success of the infectious R&B groover "Come Back to Me." Other highlights from the singer's debut include "Never Underestimate a Girl," which has all the snap and tart wit of Janet Jackson's best work, and the sweet, citrus-y "Let Go" and "Psychic," which both demonstrate the singer's mellower, more melodic side.

The Slits, Blondie, Wreckless Eric, Kate Bush ("when she was my age"), Prince and Eminem. Typical of gob dropping reactions to the album, NME proclaimed, "Lily Allen - the cool as f**k sound of the summer".

Rabbit Loves : JAMES BROWN 9:04 PM

James Joseph Brown, Jr. (May 3, 1933 – December 25, 2006), commonly referred to as "The Godfather of Soul", was an American entertainer recognized as one of the most influential figures in 20th-century popular music.

As a prolific singer, songwriter, bandleader and record producer, Brown was a seminal force in the evolution of gospel and rhythm and blues into soul and funk. He left his mark on numerous other musical genres, including rock, jazz, reggae, disco, dance and electronic music, afrobeat, and hip-hop music.

Brown began his professional music career in 1953 and skyrocketed to fame in the late 1950s and early 1960s on the strength of his thrilling live performances and a string of smash hits. In spite of various personal problems and setbacks, he continued to score hits in every decade through the 1980s. In the 1960s and 1970s Brown was a presence in American political affairs, noted especially for his activism on behalf of African Americans and the poor (as well as his outspoken support for Richard Nixon[citation needed]).

Brown was recognized by a plethora of (mostly self-bestowed) titles, including Soul Brother Number One, Mr. Dynamite, the Hardest-Working Man in Show Business, Minister of The New New Super Heavy Funk, Mr. Please Please Please, The Boss, and the best-known, the Godfather of Soul. He was renowned for his shouting vocals, feverish dancing and unique rhythmic style.

The Godfather of Soul, James Brown, has died at the age of 73 this Christmas morning. He was admitted to hospital on the 24th after being diagnosed with severe pneumonia but died at 1:45 local time.

*sigh* I don't know what to say.. this man was a legend! He's been a HUGE influence to music today: hip-hop, funk, techno, you name it. We'll miss you man. Rest in peace.

Rabbit Loves : Regina Spektor 11:16 AM

.......................

Regina Spektor is a weird one -- she is a kid in an adult's body with an eccentric flair and an amazing talent. Those other piano-playing female singer-songwriters have nothing on her, as Fiona Apple is overrated, Nellie McKay is a kook and Tori Amos is irrelevant and boring. With her third album, Spektor is able to use her eccentricities to craft remarkably off-kilter pop music that straddles everything in-between folk, indie and jazz.

Some of these songs have been bouncing around for years. Spektor is known for her incredibly long live shows [check last fall's three hour Bowery performance] that are filled with nuggets she has been tooling around with that just never seem to come to fruition. "Edit," "Summer in the City" and "Apres Moi" have been knocking about for quite awhile and now that the songs are fully realized, they are that much more captivating. Spektor is one those artists who can thrive in any medium, and while she is a totally different beast live, her recorded output ranges between beautiful and intense.

Regina Spektor has never been an artist that you get right away. She didn't hit me until I saw her perform live, and I am basically sold for life. On Begin To Hope, Spektor remains the same goofy eccentric we all know and love, but she takes another step away from her peers to solidify herself as a classic pop musician who is not afraid to chart new territory

BEGIN TO HOPE finds anti-folk chanteuse Regina Spektor taking a small step away from piano balladry into the brave new world of the pop song. And what pop songs they are. Spektor's voice takes the foreground over sparse arrangements of guitars, strings, some electronic beats, and yes, piano. Her singing, if you can believe it, is even better than it was on SOVIET KITSCH: intimate, playful, and full of jazzy phrasings. She slips effortlessly into falsetto and scat in a manner reminiscent of Joni Mitchell. "Hotel Song" finds Spektor singing whispery and smooth over humming organs and a muted snare drum. In "On The Radio," she sings about hearing G'N'R's "November Rain" while plucked strings and synth arpeggios go noodling on behind her. This is an album full of surprises, not the least of which is how lovely the effect is overall.

2004 Regina Spektor - Soviet Kitsch

Soviet Kitsch is the third album by Regina Spektor. The title is drawn from Milan Kundera's expression for the impractical romantic ideals of communism, a theme in his book The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

"Chemo Limo" – 6:04
"Somedays" – 3:21

DOWNLOAD THIS ALBUM : Soviet Kitsch

She's great! I purchased her newest cd first, 'Begin to Hope', and quickly fell in love with it. 'Soviet Kitsch' displays more of Regina's originality. Her child-like lyrics and funky beats make this album complete with songs about love, heartache, death, choices, struggle and ambition. I believe it's a good taste of her talents as well as her views.

The entire album is great, each song offering something unique to the listener. Its a great example of how modern singer-songwriters are still breaking ground, while holding onto traditional acoustic instrumentation. So often it seems the adjective 'innovative' is saved only for electronic music, that niche of music which embraces modern technology. It's sad to see other musicians overlooked, especially talents like Regina, who are absolutely worth noting.

11:11 takes a much more jazz-like approach, with aspects of poetry, a beatnik sound, and a feeling of improv. One song is heavily reminiscent of Mike Myers' reading scenes in "How I Married an Axe Murderer."

I found the original number station clip that Wilco used for their "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot sample". It is quite intriguing. I love the woman's accent, but I wonder what the hidden message was.

Regina Spektor - Samson
This song is lovely, and the trippy video only enhances my appreciation of it. I must admit, I am really getting hooked on Regina's new album. You will too when it finally comes out next week.

Cold War Kids - The Soloist in the Living Room
Man, I love the drums in the intro. Toobad the song is so short. The Cold War Kids hail from Cali. The lead singer sounds like Walter Martin of The Walkmen, which I guess isn't a bad thing.

Rabbit Loves : SADE 9:08 PM

On January 16, 1959,Helen Folasade Adu, Was born in Ibadan, Nigeria and raised in Colchester, Essex moved at the age of 4 after her English mother and Nigerian father seperated. Sade spent most of her life trying to do what's right, honest, and true. Growing up she listened to inspirational artists such as the likes of Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, and the late great Marvin Gaye. She never thought about singing herself rather she studied Fashion Design at St. Martins Art College. Singing as a vocalists when a couple of oldschool friends started a band "Until they found a proper singer."

From there she was singing with early 80's Latin Funk Collective pride, It was then she discovered a rare delight for songwriting. It was while she was with the group, that Sade co-wrote "Smooth Operator" and it was from there that Sade abandoned differences and finally stepped onto the center stage to form her own group with pride members Stuart Matthewman, Andrew Hale, And Paul Spencer Denman

Like fine wine, Sade just gets better with time. That voice is heaven. The whole composition is great. Remember reading reviews like this is really useless. Music unlike many other things in life speaks directly to your soul. There is no bad or good music, all that matters is that you enjoy it. Others have opinions-but they do not matter. YOU HAVE TO HEAR IT TO BELIEVE IT. I LISTEN TO THIS CD EVERY NIGHT!!!!!

The surprise hit 'Your Love Is King' was a very mature record for the singles market and one that opened the door to smooth soul-based pop. This album proved that she was no fluke and it became one of the most acclaimed debuts of all time. Sade rode out the publicity and coped with everything; for once the music did the talking. 'Smooth Operator' put her back in the pop charts but it was the overall class and confidence of the whole album that makes it so darn good. Her reading of Timmy Thomas's 'Why Can't We Live Together' is a highlight.
