Old, tired arrangements that leave her as the New York times calls her" a Karaoke Barbra" Miss Eder tries as hard as she can to copy exactly Barbras "Don't Rain On My Parade", but in fact does sound like a weak imitation of Barbra. Her "Some People" only touches on any semblance of Lizas great version of this song. Eder needs to come up with a style of her own. She protests any intention of sounding like Babs and Liza, but indeed keeps recording their songs and in their style. My advice to her is, either show what you've got, or quit recording copy cat albums. While she is, in fact, very pretty, with something of a young Teri Hatcher about her, the 23-year-old (hence the album title TWENTYTHREE) singer-songwriter is, in many ways, the female equivalent to the mid-2000s school of sensitive, male singer-songwriters. Like John Mayer, she can shift from earnest confessionalism to chart-ready pop with ease, and like Jason Mraz (a fellow San Diegan who duets with Prettyman on the smooth, vaguely bossa nova-ish "Shy That Way"), she's not afraid to add a few playful R&B accents into her otherwise straightforward '70s-style soft rock. (Her R&B flavor is evident on the opener "Love Love Love," which adds a prominent dance beat to Prettyman's husky voice and pop-folk acoustic guitar.) The 11 self-penned tracks are all rooted in Prettyman's voice and guitar, and the best, like the reflective closer "Simple As It Should Be," showcase both in stark, lovely settings. STRANGE & BEAUTIFUL--a compilation of tracks from Aqualung's first two UK albums--evokes a somber, rain-swept world where people drift prettily away from each other, bruise each other with indifference, and quietly break each other's hearts, all to a lazy back-beat and deep, programmed bass. There is a consistency of mood here--literally every song is a ballad--but Hales is an able enough craftsman both as a producer and a writer to create intriguing variations in sound. "Left Behind" has an insistent, hook-laden melody and a slow, steady rock feel. On "If I Fall," Hales's poignant, Thom Yorke-ish vocal shadow-boxes with a great bass line, while slightly dissonant guitar arpeggios (rare on this keyboard-heavy album) tug at the heartstrings. Like much teen and commercial urban and R&B, REBELS flirts with contemporary hip-hop production, throwing in bits of reggaeton and club music amid the catchy melodies. But the distinguishing factor of REBELS is the mixture of Spanish and English lyrics. RBD have made their songs deliberately simple and learnable for listeners in both languages, especially on the choruses, which usually feature vocals from the entire ensemble (which encourages anyone within earshot to sing along). Raw with Swizz Beatz was an unexpected but still hot collabo. My favorite song still is my everything and a dozen roses. I think the album is very good but I think Monica is underpromoted compared to most artists like Beyonce and Ciara. Yeah, it’s her first “original” album since secret, but there’s still quite a number of old songs on the album. Despite that, I feel that Black Cherry makes a strong showing, especially since I enjoyed a majority of her new songs. Candle Light stuck out the most to me because it was such a sweet-sounding song, driven solely by her voice and a piano. It’s no Angela Aki composition, but I was impressed. Milk Tea was alright considering that it’s her first time writing a song, but I applaud anyone who tries to write music because, quite frankly, I think it’s hard as hell. The worst song on the album has to be WON’T BE LONG~Black Cherry Version~. I feel sorry for the people who don’t get the first pressing of the album because at least the Red Cherry Version saves the album from the bad taste of the Black Cherry Version despite it being the EXILE & Koda Kumi arrangement of the song with just Kumi singing it. The Black Cherry Version tries to krunk things up and, quite frankly, it destroys the song and leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Possessing a tone reminiscent of John Coltrane coupled with the warm swing of Dexter Gordon, Turner soloed without sounding like he was soloing, just extending the melody in novel ways. Turner's sophomore effort is an all-ballad set that highlights his gorgeous tone. Turner and an excellent supporting cast (guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, bassist Larry Grenadier, pianist Kevin Hays, and drummer Brian Blade) play wonderfully on "I Loves You, Porgy," and "All or Nothing At All," among others. Despite the roster, somehow the music on the whole lacks a certain weight and energy that no amount of glowing lyrical interpretation can replace. None of this really detracts from Turner, who plays beautifully throughout. Robin THicke is very refreshing to my ears considering that we the American people are fed the same 'poop' (cheap hip-hop and not Tupac quality, as well as repetitive R&B mid tempo jams) daily.
