Chega De Saudade download part 1 part 2 part 3  2006 Various Artists - Bossa Nova II: Soothing Sounds Of Brazil If asked to compare the two major styles in Latin jazz, I'd vote the laid-back bossa nova, developed in Brazil by combining samba and cool jazz, into second place behind the hot Afro-Cuban jazz that Dizzy Gillespie and a legion of Cuban greats invented. The most important reason is that the Brazilians laid what for me is insufficient emphasis on solo improvisation. But since this lack was partly filled by American jazz musicians such as Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd who enthusiastically took up the genre from the start, and since anyway Brazilian maestros such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud and Joao Gilberto and Luiz Bonfa gave bossa nova such a mellow and pleasant sound, even second place in this imaginary contest is quite honourable. The nineteen tracks on this album are taken from the cream of Verve/ Universal's bossa nova catalogue. Getz figures extensively here, dominating several tracks with his mellow tenor saxophone sound and co-operating in establishing the mood with the sensuous sounds of Bonfa's and Joao Gilberto's guitars, Astrud and Joao Gilberto's singing, and Jobim's piano. Bonfa also dominates a couple of numbers on his guitar, as does another guitarist Baden Powell (Brazilian despite his unlikely name!). Getz and Byrd (again, guitar) share the honours on one number, while Getz and the piano virtuoso Chick Corea, famous for mainstream jazz, jazz-rock and forays into Latin jazz, offer a rousing rendition of O Grande Amor with some noticeably good drum support. Other American jazzmen represented by brilliant examples of their dabbling in bossa nova are Coleman Hawkins (tenor sax) with Samba para Bean, Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass on guitar with Insensatez and El Gento respectively, and Gerry Mulligan, who brings his baritione saxophone virtuosity to Prelude in E Minor. But pride of place on this cool album goes to that innovator of be-bop and Afro-Cuban jazz, Dizzy Gillespie, with One-Note Samba. His own trumpet solo is only the hottest and most exciting in a series that includes flute, piano, percussion and bass. For regular collectors the only arguable drawback to this anthology is that four or five tracks figured on an earlier Verve/Polygram anthology, Gitanes Jazz - Jazz Bossa Nova. The ex-Sugababes singer returns with her second solo abum "Ghost" that is nothing like the bubbly R&B flavored pop she used to crank out with the Sugababes. The singers appears to have transformed into a more eclectic creature who is looking to push new sonic boundaries as an established pop artist. "Some people say you can’t make left-field pop music and be commercial,” announces Siobhan Donaghy in a press statement, “and that’s bullshit. They always say that when there’s nothing else out there like it. I remember what was on the radio when my career began and God, it’s so diverse now in comparison. And it feels good to be a part of it.” She was dropped from London Records after her first solo album was released in 2003 due to a take-over by Warner. Donaghy took a lengthy break to read, travel and explore new music. She hooked up with producer James Sanger (U2, Brian Eno, Keane) to create an album that has resulted in a sound that is "coolly dramatic as vintage Kate Bush, as vocally ephemeral as the Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Fraser, as electro-dazzling as ‘Ray of Light’-era Madonna." "Ghost" is an epic electro tune that creates a compelling soundscape, which might alienate some of her teenage fans, but will likely open the door to listeners who are in the mood for something a little more crunchy. There's the hip-hop path, on which plenty of next-big-thing predictors got to know her through her collaboration with Fort Minor on The Rising Tide (her haunting chorus on "Where'd You Go" became an instant hit). Then there's the TV path, on which anybody with an ear for pop with staying power could have chosen between a couple of trails: both the NBC show Conviction and the WB series Related have featured her plaintive song "What I Wouldn't Give" off this, her debut. However you reach this piano-propelled 20-year-old star in the making, though, you won't be sorry. In the space of three songs, she recalls a decade's worth of singer-songwriters twice her age, and in an unhurried, stylish way that suggests she's doing it handily. A wrenching Tori Amos vibe weaves through "Again & Again," a track that recalls Shawn Colvin in equal measure; Suzanne Vega circa Solitude Standing surfaces in the vivid short verses of "Saturday"; and Sarah McLachlan seeps out over most of the vocals, but especially those on "Give It Up for You" and the lovely "Cellar Door." Joni Mitchell is the association Brook was going for--she cites her as influence number one--but comparisons with the more obvious mentors can't come as much of a bummer. It's not an entirely original concept, but the choice of tracks happens to be second to none, drawing from a host of respected house, nu-jazz, broken beat, and downtempo artists, as well as some "real" jazz musicians like American legend Herbie Hancock (with his track "The Essence") and contemporary Norwegian star Bugge Wesseltoft (with the multitextured "Change"). Featuring artists like Beady Belle ("Game"), Mo' Horizons ("Hit the Road, Jack"), and Kenny Dope ("Mr. Dope"), SGDPC 2 may be a mouthful to say, but it has all the mellow house, warm horns, liquid rhythms, and soulful head nods you'll need to make a perfect summer evening soundtrack. The result? An album of A-list karaoke that at times, struggles to transcend its novelty, but nonetheless throws up some fun reversions.
