In many ways Charles Aznavour is like those old Gothic cathedrals that you visit a hundred times but always find something new to admire. Catch your reflection in those eyes, which gleam as dark and intense as ever; follow the soaring spire of those vocals as they rise to dizzying heights or simply pause for wonder as you look on those finely-crafted musical miniatures produced by a past master of French chanson. Aznavour is the last of the great French music heroes, who like Maurice Chevalier and Yves Montand in their day, is loved and applauded everywhere from Las Vegas and Moscow to the Armenian capital Yerevan.
Aznavour is currently back in the music news with a new album – could be his 100th, could be his first, it makes no difference because what rapidly becomes evident listening to Je voyage is that the famous Aznavour charm is still firmly intact. There was a time when young Charles was dismissed as a secretary/protégé of Piaf's, an overlooked half in a songwriting partnership with 'chanson' composer Pierre Roche. There was a time when, mocked for his diminutive stature and his hangdog looks, you wouldn't have bet heavily on his future! But through years of trial, error and sheer perseverance Aznavour has managed to swing his career around and come out on top, establishing himself as a top-selling French star with an impressively long track record. And his new album, Je voyage, proves the sheer extent of his singing and songwriting talent.

This was, and still is, my favorite pop album from the 1980s. Listening to it always puts me back in a happy and carefree mood. Most of the songs are still endearing today, including "Lost in your eyes", "Love in disguise", "No more rhyme", "We could be together" and my 2 favorites "Electic youth" and "Who loves ya baby". Debbie's strength lies in the way she writes and sings upbeat pop songs that make you forget your worries and troubles. Hence, listening to her is like a breath of much-needed fresh air. "Electric youth" is by far her best work to date, at least in my books. Her smash hit debut "Out of the blue" is more consistent and dancey, but song for song, "Electric youth" is a much stronger album. Overall, a great album to get if you are in a nostalgic mood. Compared to other artists, Debbie Gibson's songs endure better with time. She doesn't sing about sex and boys all the time, unlike Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera, and much of her lyrics promote positivity and youthful energy, which is always a good thing. Highly recommended!

I’ve been thinking for a long time (since last week) about MPEGs being on this site. For one, I get tons of e-mails asking why certain videos won’t download, why I only leave them up for 3 days, why the quality isn’t 100% perfect, etc. I just want to let all of you know that I am not obligated to do this site the way that I do it. I do it this way so that I can share my knowledge, and my resources with all of you guys. With that said, I won’t be posting MPEGs anymore for a little while (at least until I can get more serverspace). I will post videos as WMV (which are of great quality .. even better than RM).
But, if you do want MPEGs to be available at my blog, I’m going to need your help. So that I can purchase more serverspace, I need for ALL OF YOU to click on the Google Ads at the top of every page on this site. You can find the google ads in the Gallery and Message Board as well. Doing this will generate more money, and more money means more serverspace/bandwidth, and more of that means .. MORE MPEGs. So if you want MPEGs to be a continued tradition here at FB, you have to pitch in and do your part. Thanks a bunch for reading this message =)

Amazing but true moments in professional sports: a PGA tour player, when interviewed, makes reference to his focus on "becoming a better player." This, of course, occurs shortly after a display of skills the likes of which weekend golfers have no hope of attaining. I've heard similar assertions made by high caliber musicians — that every once in a while they have a night that meets their expectations. Right...and that crazy exercise in chord change sculpting you normally put on is just tripe?
Look, I do understand these sentiments. After all, golf is a game that's as much mental and physical so there are many ways to improve. The same can be said for music-making. It's just that the goals set by the career musician are so far above the 'normal' person's realm that it's tough to empathize or to hear the "progress" that's being made.
The opening track of Joey Calderazzo's Amanecer has, for once, given the listener some insight into where the pianist is headed. "Midnight Voyager," which first appeared on Michael Brecker's Tales From The Hudson, is a complete reworking of the original. By "complete" I mean that I did not recognize the tune until nearing the end. Repeat listens revealed that Calderazzo has both deconstructed and expanded the piece. Quite amazing.
Amanecer finds Calderazzo stepping away from his Branford Marsalis sideman role to explore the possibilities of the piano as a solo instrument as well as harmonic collaborator in duo (with vocalist Claudia Acuna and guitarist Romano Lubambo) and trio (Acuna and Lubambo) formats. While the solo work allows for extended examination of harmonic ideas, the group situations let Calderazzo focus on songs: "Playing with Claudia and Romano really underscores my love of songs, and reminds me that The Beatles, who I grew up listening to, have has as much if not more of an impact on my music than John Coltrane."
This love of song is indeed evident on the title track, played by the full trio. Acuna's searching vocals paint out that lovely melody as the piano and guitar (lightly!) provide structure. To hear more of Acuna's sweet voice, check out the duet "So Many Moons," which somehow brings to mind Pat Metheny's "Last Train Home." Calderazzo also explores the bossa song form on "The Lonely Swan," a duet with Lubamba.
The solo piano pieces on Amanecer range in style from the pensive (a very open take on Michael Brecker's "Sea Glass") to the Monk-ish ("I've Never Been In Love Before") to downright gorgeous — a version of my favorite Bill Evans tune "Waltz For Debby." I especially like "Toonay," where it seems that the ideas are driving Calderazzo's right hand to extremes in angularity. Great stuff. It's easy to see why Branford has this man in his group.
With Amanecer, Joey Calderazzo has now set his musical bar very high. It'll be interesting to see how his future work responds...and to see how his role in future Branford Marsalis projects changes. Yes, I'm sure that at some point they'll "get it right."

Four cuts, including the Grammy-winning "Don't Know Much," feature duets between Ronstadt (still singing with power and assurance even at the top of her range) and angel-voiced Aaron Neville. In many ways Charles Aznavour is like those old Gothic cathedrals that you visit a hundred times but always find something new to admire.
