28-07-2006 : Miami Vice but not Wise 11:33 AM

    Miami Vice
    Release Date: July 28, 2006
Starring: Colin Farrell, Jamie Foxx, Gong Li, Luis Tosar
    Directed by: Michael Mann

When he's at the top of his game, few filmmakers are able to marry form and content as successfully as Michael Mann. A technical wizard with an artist's eye, Mann has an innate understanding of how a story should be told visually. For his 1992 adaptation of The Last of the Mohicans, he composed stunning widescreen images that brought an epic majesty to the American frontier. Seven years later, he went in the opposite direction for The Insider, a story of backroom conspiracies that was told almost entirely in tight close-ups. In both cases, the visuals perfectly complemented the narrative without suffocating the proceedings in style. It's no wonder that Mann enjoys such a healthy critical reputation; he's one of the few big-budget directors out there who respects film as an art form, as well as entertainment.

At the same time, Mann has also been guilty of helming movies where the style turns out to be the only substance. Take his disappointing biopic Ali, which contains some spectacular boxing sequences but has nothing new to say about the man himself. And while Collateral starts off like gangbusters, it loses its way as it enters the home stretch, making it to the end credits purely on the strength of the digital cinematography. Mann's latest picture, Miami Vice, is unfortunately plagued by similar problems, although there are individual sequences here than rank among the best work he's ever done.
