Rabbit Loves : Regina Spektor 11:16 AM

    .......................

Regina Spektor is a weird one -- she is a kid in an adult's body with an eccentric flair and an amazing talent. Those other piano-playing female singer-songwriters have nothing on her, as Fiona Apple is overrated, Nellie McKay is a kook and Tori Amos is irrelevant and boring. With her third album, Spektor is able to use her eccentricities to craft remarkably off-kilter pop music that straddles everything in-between folk, indie and jazz.

Some of these songs have been bouncing around for years. Spektor is known for her incredibly long live shows [check last fall's three hour Bowery performance] that are filled with nuggets she has been tooling around with that just never seem to come to fruition. "Edit," "Summer in the City" and "Apres Moi" have been knocking about for quite awhile and now that the songs are fully realized, they are that much more captivating. Spektor is one those artists who can thrive in any medium, and while she is a totally different beast live, her recorded output ranges between beautiful and intense.

Regina Spektor has never been an artist that you get right away. She didn't hit me until I saw her perform live, and I am basically sold for life. On Begin To Hope, Spektor remains the same goofy eccentric we all know and love, but she takes another step away from her peers to solidify herself as a classic pop musician who is not afraid to chart new territory

There is some dispute to this, and it makes sense. I honestly can't tell. It was on a MySpace labeled Chan Marshall, but with Regina Spektor's song On The Radio as well.

BEGIN TO HOPE finds anti-folk chanteuse Regina Spektor taking a small step away from piano balladry into the brave new world of the pop song. And what pop songs they are. Spektor's voice takes the foreground over sparse arrangements of guitars, strings, some electronic beats, and yes, piano. Her singing, if you can believe it, is even better than it was on SOVIET KITSCH: intimate, playful, and full of jazzy phrasings. She slips effortlessly into falsetto and scat in a manner reminiscent of Joni Mitchell. "Hotel Song" finds Spektor singing whispery and smooth over humming organs and a muted snare drum. In "On The Radio," she sings about hearing G'N'R's "November Rain" while plucked strings and synth arpeggios go noodling on behind her. This is an album full of surprises, not the least of which is how lovely the effect is overall.

2004 Regina Spektor - Soviet Kitsch

Soviet Kitsch is the third album by Regina Spektor. The title is drawn from Milan Kundera's expression for the impractical romantic ideals of communism, a theme in his book The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

"Ghost of Corporate Future" – 3:21
    "Chemo Limo" – 6:04
    "Somedays" – 3:21

She's great! I purchased her newest cd first, 'Begin to Hope', and quickly fell in love with it. 'Soviet Kitsch' displays more of Regina's originality. Her child-like lyrics and funky beats make this album complete with songs about love, heartache, death, choices, struggle and ambition. I believe it's a good taste of her talents as well as her views.

The entire album is great, each song offering something unique to the listener. Its a great example of how modern singer-songwriters are still breaking ground, while holding onto traditional acoustic instrumentation. So often it seems the adjective 'innovative' is saved only for electronic music, that niche of music which embraces modern technology. It's sad to see other musicians overlooked, especially talents like Regina, who are absolutely worth noting.

Songs is the second album by singer-songwriter Regina Spektor. "Samson" was featured in an episode of CSI: NY, which aired 26 April 2006, and was rerecorded with a slightly increased tempo and more strings for her 2006 album, Begin to Hope.

11:11 takes a much more jazz-like approach, with aspects of poetry, a beatnik sound, and a feeling of improv. One song is heavily reminiscent of Mike Myers' reading scenes in "How I Married an Axe Murderer."

I found the original number station clip that Wilco used for their "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot sample". It is quite intriguing. I love the woman's accent, but I wonder what the hidden message was.

    Regina Spektor - Samson
This song is lovely, and the trippy video only enhances my appreciation of it. I must admit, I am really getting hooked on Regina's new album. You will too when it finally comes out next week.

Cold War Kids - The Soloist in the Living Room
Man, I love the drums in the intro. Toobad the song is so short. The Cold War Kids hail from Cali. The lead singer sounds like Walter Martin of The Walkmen, which I guess isn't a bad thing.
