Diary of 01 - 05 June 2007
1:25 AM I watched again with The Merchant of Venice 2004 I do loved Al , in this story , he acted very great !!! further details in website The Merchant of Venice is one of William Shakespeare's best-known plays, written sometime between 1596 and 1598. Although it is sometimes classified as a comedy ("comedy" had a very different meaning at the time; see Shakespearean comedies) and shares certain aspects with the other romantic comedies, it is perhaps more remembered for its dramatic scenes (particularly the trial scene) and is best known for its portrayal of the Jew Shylock, which has raised questions of anti-semitism.. Set in the lavish era of 16th century Venice, Shakespeare's most powerful play comes to bear in Michael Radford's THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, which follows the interlocking lives of a captivating assortment of classic Shakespearean characters. Bassanio (Joseph Fiennes) is the typical Elizabethan lover and aristocrat young, impulsive and romantic whose lavish lifestyle has left him deep in debt and desperately in love with the fair Portia (Lynn Collins) of Belmont. But to win her hand, he must prove his worth. To prove his worth, he must not only raise money he doesn't have, but he must also correctly solve the riddle of matrimony bequeathed by Portia's late father. Determined to call Portia his bride, Bassanio employs the support of his dear friend Antonio (Jeremy Irons), a successful merchant residing in Venice. But with no word from his trading fleet, Antonio is short of resources and must use his credit for a loan. This loan comes in the form of Shylock (Al Pacino), a Jewish loan shark who, like all his people, is forced to live in "ghettoes" and has limited access to the city. Yet, all is not as it appears between Antonio and Shylock. Antonio has publicly denounced Shylock and other Jews for their practice of usury (loaning money at exorbitant rates of interest), and consistently hurts their business by offering loans with no interest. This set of circumstances, along with the persecution of Jews at the time, has made Shylock spiteful towards Antonio, who jumps at the chance to have the merchant in his debt. However, this time Shylock decides to offer his loan at no interest; instead, he demands a pound of flesh from Antonio if his loan is not repaid on time. Confident that Bassanio will return his good fortune three times over, Antonio agrees to the unusual terms. As Bassanio travels to Belmont with Gratiano (Kris Marshall) to woo his beloved, other events threaten to ruin his quest before it is fulfilled. Portia, in the company of her lady-in-waiting Nerissa (Heather Goldenhersh), has already been welcoming potential suitors, who at any time could solve the mystery of her father's will which states that she must marry the man who correctly chooses one of three caskets. Then Antonio's trade ships fail to produce any profit for the merchant. And, Shylock's daughter Jessica (Zuleikha Robinson) impulsively elopes with Bassanio's friend Lorenzo (Charlie Cox); in the process, she escapes with a fair amount of her father's personal wealth. This shatters Shylock to the core and causes him to focus all his energy on the repayment of the debt, almost taking out a lifetime of discrimination on the merchant. Upon hearing of his friend's set of circumstances, Bassanio leaves Belmont and rushes home to find a solution to Antonio's predicament. But before Bassanio can arrive home, the loan is declared in default and the distraught and semi-deranged Shylock demands his pound of flesh from Antonio in order to fully seek his revenge. The Duke (Anton Rodgers), the reigning power in the city, has called a legal expert to the court to proceed over these extraordinary hearings is Antonio truly in default on his loan? Is the payment that Shylock is asking for justified? Can Bassanio return in time to save Antonio? In true Shakespearean fashion, all is not as it seems in a story wrought with morality, revenge, redemption and love. Audio CD (January 11, 2005) Original Release Date: January 11, 2005 1. Helpless (Neil Young) Download Both a stopgap release until Patti Smith writes another album's worth of material and a way to keep her name in front of the public after her highly publicized 2007 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this set of a dozen covers finds the singer/poet in an unusually reflective mode. Some of the sources are obvious for those familiar with Smith's influences (the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan), some less so (Paul Simon, Nirvana, Jefferson Airplane, Neil Young), and a few come out of left field (the Allman Brothers Band, Stevie Wonder, Tears for Fears). Smith's innate class and approach guarantees there's nothing awful here, but there also isn't much that stamps these versions with her own vision. She does little more than deliver the words in her unique spoken/sung voice and--except for adding a banjo and her own poetry to an acoustic "Smells Like Teen Spirit"--keeps the arrangements close to the originals. At times she seems distant from the material, running through the Doors' "Soul Kitchen" and Young's "Helpless" with an oddly soulless detachment. Likewise, her band seems to be on autopilot, playing with little emotional involvement or attempts to bring fresh interpretations to tunes that are, with the exception of Dylan's "Changing of the Guard," surprisingly unimaginative choices. Considering the raging and extreme overhaul Smith did on Van Morrison's "Gloria" and the Who's "My Generation" in her younger days, this quieter, gentler approach seems flaccid, even bland in comparison. 2007 BeatleJazz - All You Need Is Love Audio CD (May 17, 2007) Original Release Date: March 20, 2007 Number of Discs: 1 Label: Lightyear 1. Waterfalls They tend to follow one of two paths: a one dimensional transposition of melody performed over standard charts or noodling by small combos whose self indulgence rarely resolves itself in a satisfying statement of the melody. Truly transcendent reinterpretations like those by jazz pianists Brad Mehldau and Fred Hersh are sparse. The group BeatleJazz--consisting of Brian Melvin on drums, David Kikoski on piano, and Larry Grenadier on bass--has devoted itself exclusively to performing Beatles pieces. This, their fourth outing, is at worst pleasant and listenable. At its best, it is remarkably good. Joined by Toots Thielemans on harmonica, Richard Bona on vocals and electric bass, and Joe Lovano on saxophone, this collection succeeds best where it takes the greatest liberties. Some pieces, like Fool on the Hill and The Night Before, fall into the pervasive category of pedestrian covers. All You Need is Love, featuring vocals by Richard Bona, is similarly pleasant but forgettable. The standouts include Lady Madonna, which defeats expectation at every turn and demands repeated listening and even analysis. In the midst of bold liberties and interpretations, the piece returns to the peg of a signature phase before launching back out on trajectories that take it to rapturous experimentation on the edge of time signatures and sonority. Also notable is the trio's treatment of I Want You. The dark Beatles original seems an unlikely candidate for the transition to jazz ensemble. More improbable still is the group's decision to underpin the tune with a funky little backbeat. It works. The Continuing story of Bungalow Bill shows Joe Lovano to his best advantage and the Beatles at their least recognizable. When the theme finally appears, it's almost a taunt, a deft sleight of hand before the music disappears up the sleeve again. This album is a gamble for both Beatle fans and jazz fans alike. But there's something here that will seduce the radicals on both sides of great divide. And this statement is indeed not exaggerated, a view of the list of subscribers confirmed that we have to actually do it here with the outstanding female voices of the present. Directly in the Eröffnungssong we meet the most popular and usually-selling jazz singer of the recent time: Norah Jones. It is represented with their guest contribution for Charlie Hunters Longplay similar to Playground, in which it the Folktitel “Day Is Done” all too early of the deceased nod Drake changed into a mitternächtlich bluesige Ballade. Subsequently, Cassandra Wilson betört in funky groovenden self-composition “show ME A Love” with its dark-mysterious Vokaltimbre. Afterwards then the Swede Viktoria Tolstoy comes to the row and sets in its treatment of Steve Kuhns “Saga OF Harrison Crabfeathers” on a jazz in the traditional acoustic format. It follows Dianne Reeves with the Evergreen “What A Little Moonlight CAN DO”, which had before their also Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O'Day and Peggy Lee in the repertoire; it makes from it a sticking on Fingerschnipp Swingnummer. And in such a way it continues to go along lively in altogether sixteen pieces -- as it is called appropriate in the album sub-title -- The Finest Female jazz Today. As it is in the Famous row already good tradition, also this time rising new generation forces receive their chance apart from recognized sizes. In the homeland they are partially already somewhat more well-known, with us want them however still by the masses to be discovered. The Dane Cæcilie Norby about is recommended lastingly with a nordisch cool jazz version of the policy hit “Tea in The Sahara”. Its Canadian colleague Molly Johnson makes attentive in “Melody” with a nearly classical bar jazz on itself. And at the time of the admission only the years old Reneé Olstead (“quietly standing”) finally enthusiastically in the Schmuseballade “A Love That load” wants fourteen with an insanity voice. Boulevard Of Broken Dreams Download: This album appears in the footsteps of 2004's The Girl in the Other Room but doesn't sound like a follow-up. Whereas The Girl saw the pianist-singer abandon the Great American Songbook for more personal pastures, From This Moment On sees her working out on standards done in traditional arrangements. Although the tracks here are by the likes of Cole Porter, Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn, and the Gershwins, Krall sounds more at ease than ever before; perhaps digging deep inside on The Girl loosened her up. Backed by the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra on seven tracks, Krall sings off the big band with ease. On the title track, she keeps up with a galloping bass and explosive brass arrangements and even ventures into scatting toward the end of the song. Her voice has also acquired a wonderfully worn texture in the past few years, and it works wonders on the ballads (just listen to "Isn't This a Lovely Day" and "Little Girl Blue" for instance). When standards are done like this, there's just nothing like 'em. 2007 Suzanne Vega - Beauty & Crime CD audio (4 June 2007) Label EMI Homepage http://www.suzannevega.com 01. Zephyr & I 02. Following up on the meeting of the progressive-jazz minds that took place on Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau's mostly-duets album METHENY/MEHLDAU, the forward-looking pair expand their partnership to include a rhythm section on most of the songs. In this format, Metheny and Mehldau bring out the best in each other; simultaneously providing a framework for gorgeously melodic lines and egging one another on to the outskirts of improvisation. Though the guitarist and pianist are of different generations, it's this combination of beauty and bravery that gives them their common ground. On "Silent Movie," for example, they indulge in a lambent feel, slowly unfurling lines of elegance and grace. Meanwhile, the quirky harmonies and free time they get into with "Santa Cruz Slacker," among others, reminds one of why both men remain leading lights of the post-bop world. 2007 Celine Dion - D'Ellas Audio CD (June 2, 2007) Original Release Date: May 21, 2007 Number of Discs: 1 1.
