Rabbit Loves : Vanessa Carlton
1:28 AM Vanessa Lee Carlton (born August 16, 1980) is an American pop singer, songwriter, and pianist best known for the single "A Thousand Miles" from her platinum-selling debut album Be Not Nobody (2002). Carlton's second album Harmonium (2004) was a commercial failure, which led her to part company from her record label A&M, though she still holds a dedicated fanbase. She currently resides in San Francisco with her producer-boyfriend Stephan Jenkins (lead singer of Third Eye Blind), and her third album is slated for a spring 2007 release on Irv Gotti's record label The Inc. When Vanessa was two years old she figured out "It's a Small World" on the piano and her musical life began. Her mother exposed her to a lot of classical composers and Vanessa wrote her first (instrumental only) song when she was eight years old. When she was nine when she fell in love with ballet. At thirteen went to New York to study with legendary dancers and teachers. A year later she was accepted to the School of American Ballet in New York City. She left home and moved to New York enrolling in the Professional Children's School and began her life as a ballet dancer. By the time her senior year approached she was feeling like this might not be the best career for her. She grew frustrated and isolated. So she turned back to her music. This time the songs that came out of her were intricate songs complete with lyrics. She would even skip dance class to play piano and it was a great comfort to her. After graduation she started playing locally. A year later she signed with Interscope, Geffen, A & M Records. She is now in the studio recording her debut album, "Be Not Nobody" which is due in early March. The single "A Thousand Miles" will be out February 12, 2002. She has also been accepted to Columbia University and has started dancing again. 2004 Vanessa Carlton - Harmonium 1. White Houses 2. Who's To Say 3. Annie 4. San Francisco 5. Afterglow 6. In 2002, Vanessa Carlton was often lumped in with Michelle Branch and Avril Lavigne, who both scored hits at around the same time as Carlton's smash "A Thousand Miles." However, those in the know quickly identified her as a unique and serious talent whose work bore closer resemblance to the left-of-center stylings of Tori Amos and Suzanne Vega. The songs on her sophomore disc, HARMONIUM, were written nearly six years after those on BE NOT NOBODY, and the difference is immediately striking. A fully realized record that features lyrics of notable complexity and sensitivity, this is the type of album one can imagine smart teenage girls listening to over and over, just as their 1960s counterparts did with the early work of Joni Mitchell. With many songs co-written by Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind (Carlton's beau), HARMONIUM further explores the same classical-piano-informed progressive pop/rock sound of her debut. However, this outing is more organic and richly textured, and the frequent string and brass arrangements serve as integral elements of the sonic landscape rather than simple embellishments. From the sparse, Fender Rhodes-driven vitriol of "C'est La Vie" to the funky hip-hop grooves and sing-along hooks of "Private Radio," Carlton's second record satisfies desires for catchy immediacy and artistic depth in equal measure. Guests: Lindsay Buckingham & Pharrell Williams. 2002 Vanessa Carlton - Be Not Nobody 1. Ordinary Day 2. Unsung 3. Thousand Miles, A 4. Pretty Baby 5. Rinse 6. Sway 7. Paradise 8. Prince 9. Recorded at IGA Studios, Santa Monica, California, Henson Studios, Hollywood, California and Royaltone Studios, Burbank, California. "A Thousand Miles" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals. Although comparisons to fellow piano-playing chanteuses Fiona Apple and Tori Amos would be the easiest and laziest to make, 22-year old Vanessa Carlton's confident mastery of the 88's is more reminiscent of Ben Folds if he had Jewel's voice. Carlton's songs on BE NOT NOBODY deal with the emotional heft of love and life minus the collateral damage of physical and psychological abuse. Armed with classical training (thanks to her piano teacher mum) and a honey-soaked vocal style, Carlton burned up the airwaves and MTV's heavy rotation with the breezy hit "A Thousand Miles," and there are plenty more tricks up the sleeves of this former ballerina's Danskin. When she's not giving herself over to infatuation on the yearning "Pretty Baby" or hinting at a dark side on her version of The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black," she's hiding her vulnerability behind a barrage of pointed piano runs on the Folds-flavored "Unsung." Equally impressive are the jittery neo-funk of "Prince," the Suzanne Vega-like "Twilight," and the soaring pop of "Ordinary Day." If I could fall Into the sky Do you think time Would pass me by 'Cause you know I'd walk A thousand miles If I could Just see you Tonight And I, I Don't want to let you know I, I Drown in your memory I, I Don't want to let this go I, I Don't.... Making my way downtown Walking fast Faces passed And I'm home bound Staring blankly ahead Just making my way Making my way Through the crowd And I still need you And I still miss you And now I wonder....
