Right There (Thank You) Download There is an excellent advantage to owning a Bobby Valentino disc and it is this: no matter how many other discs you've shuffled it with, you will never get confused as to who it is you're listening to, because Bobby V.--V. Tino, if you will--name-checks himself consistently throughout every track. Special Occasion is no exception, but it also earns its keep by way of solid, sexed-up R&B. When the limber-voiced ladies' man isn't strutting his stuff à la the dancefloor-ready "Checking for Me," a full-on stomper about a lady who likes to pretend she doesn't have an eye out for Bobby V., he's pleading his case to a lover in dire need of reassurance ("Turn The Page," "Home is Where You Belong," "Soon As I Get Home"). What binds these tracks is a hard-bitten refusal to skimp on the passion; no matter how quick the tempo or quirky the beat ("Tired of Being Alone" is especially exotic), Valentino delivers with all the fire he can muster. He also has a flair for recalling his mentors without being derivative--check out his Jeffrey Osborne moment on "If I had My Way." 2006 2006 Naomi And Goro - Home 01. Will You Dance? 02. Goodbye 03. Recorded at Avatar, Secret Studios, New York, New York in 2003. Includes liner notes by John Pizzarelli. Singer/guitarist John Pizzarelli demonstrates his great love of Brazilian music--and, in particular, of bossa nova king Joao Gilberto--on this intimate, enjoyable recording. Though usually a purveyor of American jazz standards in the vocal swing tradition of Frank Sinatra, Pizzarelli proves himself equally adept at the subtle, rhythmically intricate guitar work and understated singing of Brazil's signature genre. Moreover, Pizzarelli makes the sound more accessible for stateside audiences via intriguing instrumentation (strings and flutes), and an off-the-cuff showmanship that reveals his American vocal jazz roots. BOSSA NOVA is also notable for its selection of compositions. Bossa nova standards dominate, particularly those of songwriting giant Antonio Carlos Jobim. Well-worn chestnuts like "Desafinado" and "Girl from Ipanema" (with Jobim's grandson Daniel Jobim providing Portuguese vocals here) are given warm, accomplished treatments. But there are also takes on Gershwin's "Fascinating Rhythm," James Taylor's "Your Smiling Face," and Broadway maven Stephen Sondheim's "I Remember;" with each successfully adapted to the easy, rhythmic swing of the bossa nova style. Light, accessible, and precise, this Pizzarelli release should please fans of 1960s Latin pop, and win some new converts as well. 2007 James Brown - Jazz Street Date Jun 05, 2007 01. La Vie En Rose (Accordéon) As befits the soundtrack of a music biopic, most of the heavy lifting here is done by the movie's subject: iconic French singer Edith Piaf. She was the Gallic Judy Garland, a natural performer who overcame one personal tragedy after another and was never more alive than on stage, forging an uncommon bond with both material and audience. Since actress Marion Cotillard lip-synchs in the film, the first 11 tracks on the CD are by Piaf herself, and give a good overview of her biggest hits (though we get the English version of the title track) and her feverish, ultra-dramatic style. But Piaf wasn't only a tragedienne of song: Her lighter side is represented by "Rien de Rien" and "Mon Manège à Moi," which she infuses with wonderful flair. Tracks 12-20 are made up of Christopher Gunning's richly symphonic original score (check out "La Mort de Leplée"). The last third of the album offers Piaf without Piaf, with contemporary singers Jil Aigrot and Maya Barsoni performing her songs (apparently because the originals' poor sound quality meant they would have stuck out in the movie). Watch out, however, for Mistinguett's hilarious "Il m'a vu nue," a slice of French music-hall history preserved in amber. 2007 Kelly Clarkson - My December Audio CD (June 26, 2007) Original Release Date: July 24, 2007 Number of Discs: 1 Label: RCA Records 01. Lonely" (Bonus Track) Download Given the chart success of their Grammy-winning country single "Who Says You Can't Go Home," it's no surprise Bon Jovi upped the ante by recording an entire album paying homage to Nashville. In some ways, it's amazing they didn't do this sooner, given the way Keith Urban in particular is blurring country-pop lines, much as Garth Brooks and others did in the 1990s. To their credit, you won't find predictably shallow invocations of past country icons or any self-conscious, in-your-face down-home twang added strictly to remind the listener of the musical premise. In fact, Lost Highway isn't "Bon Jovi goes country" so much as a meaningful tribute to the Nashville ethos done on their own terms. They honor the spirit of the town through 12 simple, direct originals. The intimate, smoldering "(You Want To) Make a Memory," the ballad "Seat Next To You," "Lost Highway" and its roaring celebration of freedom, and "Stranger," an effective duet with LeAnn Rimes, all invoke country's spirit, and "I Love This Town," an eloquent nod to Nashville itself, ties it together admirably. 2007 Gary Moore - Close As You Get Audio CD (May 29, 2007) Original Release Date: May 21, 2007 Number of Discs: 1 01. With his second album as a leader, 1959's TOMORROW IS THE QUESTION!, Ornette Coleman had not quite made all the necessary adjustments that would introduce his classic period. However, enough changes had been made to make it clear that the alto saxophonist -- contrary to his detractors' sneers--had a specific sound he was aiming toward, and a clear idea of how to get there. The biggest change between this album and Coleman's 1958 debut is the lack of a pianist, which puts the melodic emphasis solely on Coleman's sax and Don Cherry's trumpet. Coleman and Cherry are in remarkable sync throughout; indeed, "Rejoicing" features several passages of the pair playing in unison, and two of the album's most harmonically fearless and rhythmically loose solos are Cherry's spotlights in "Giggin'" and "Endless." Only the somewhat ordinary post-bop rhythm section of bassist Percy Heath (spelled by Red Mitchell on the last three tracks) and drummer Shelly Manne keeps TOMORROW IS THE QUESTION! from reaching the ecstatic free-jazz heights of Coleman's classic Atlantic albums. 2005 Yolanda Adams - Day By Day Audio CD (August 30, 2005) Original Release Date: May 3, 2005 01 - Victory 02 - Tonight 03 - Someone Watching Over You 04 - Alwaysness 05 - Day By Day 06 - Lift Him Up 07 - It's Gon Be Nice 08 - Be Blessed 09 - Better Than Gold 10 - Show Me 11 - I'm Grateful 12 - This Too Shall Pass It is possible that there are singers alive today with more passion, conviction and beauty than Yolanda Adams working in gospel today, but it's doubtful. It's been a full four years since the glory-giving soprano has released a new album of her own music, and it's actually worth the wait. The banging funk tunes are tight and righteous, while the ballads will knock you clean off your feet. There are a host of guest artists on Day By Day—Mary Mary, Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin, and others, as well as a half dozen of the hottest producers around. And all of that is cool, but none of them are really that necessary. This woman truly has been blessed with enormous talent, and she uses it judiciously and wisely. Anyone who cares about the state of beats will want this soundtrack companion to the Jessica Alba-starring hip-hop saga. The inventiveness of rhythm and sound on Honey’s first half dozen or so tracks makes for its own drama and should even provide some hope to those who bemoan the genre's recent lack of boundary pushing. Missy Elliott’s "Hurt Sumthin'" is a fitting start to the CD; it’s another of her and Timbaland’s forays into minor-key funk-exotica and a match for anything on her own albums. Rodney Jerkins’ setting for Blaque’s independent-women manifesto "I’m Good" stomps its percussive way to the top of the must-play list, while further offerings from Mark Ronson (with guests including Ghostface Killah) and the duo of Erick Sermon and Redman keep the progressive-party feel going. Smile 11. A Very Good Year 12. To all the girls I've loved before Tenor superstar Russell Watson is aiming to break new ground and force the boundaries. His new record is a collection of some of his lifelong favourite songs, and recording at the legendary Capitol studios in Los Angeles seemed the only way to do these songs justice - by bringing them back to their original home. With a collection of classic songs including 'Strangers in the Night', 'When I Fall in Love' and 'Born Free', Russell has truly encapsulated the magic of the golden era of music within this record. Whilst recording this record he received news that no one would want to hear - he was diagnosed as having a brain tumour. Despite this news, he kept it secret from everyone and soldiered on to complete the record. To sum it up this record is quite simply a story of passion versus emotion and there really is only one possible title. 'That's Life. Known affectionately as "Salford's answer to Pavarotti," UK classical music singer Russell Watson has proved adept at mixing up his classical repertoire with popular 20th century compositions. On previous albums, Watson has tackled songs by pop artists as diverse as Ultravox ("Vienna") Simon and Garfunkel ("Bridge Over Troubled Waters") and Freddie Mercury ("Barcelona"); but on That’s Life he turns his attention fully to the world of popular romance for the first time. Following in the sprightly footsteps of Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, Watson approaches classics like "Strangers In The Night", "When I Fall In Love" and "Born Free" with typical verve. The selection serves to showcase Watson's natural versatility to wonderful effect, and also gives him the opportunity to perform duets with acclaimed contemporary pop stars such as Alexander O'Neal and Jocelyn Brown. While the choice of songs on That’s Life is nothing extraordinary, listening to one of Britain's finest tenors delivering some of the world's most eternal love songs is an opportunity not to be missed. 2007 Beverly Knight - Music City Soul Audio CD (May 10, 2007) Original Release Date: March 12, 2007 01. Recorded in five days Nashville, Tennessee, Music City Soul sees Beverley adopting a live, organic Soul sound that pushes her Gospel roots to the fore and the result is electric. The album is produced by Mark Nevers (producer of 2006's acclaimed Candi Staton album) and features a fine collection of local Tennessee musicians who have played with legends such as Elvis Presley and Al Green. Music City Soul also features the guitar playing of legendary Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood on three tracks: 'Every Time You See Me Smile', 'Black Butta' and 'Ain't That A Lot Of Love'. 2007 Donny Osmond - Love Songs of the 70's Audio CD (5 Mar 2007) Number of Discs: 1 Label: Decca 01 - I Can See Clearly 02 - Sometimes When We Touch 03 - Let's Stay Together 04 - Laughter In The Rain 05 - Oh Girl 06 - When I Need You 07 - How Long 08 - Mandy 09 - How Deep Is Your Love 10 - Will It Go Round In Circles 11 - Alone Again (Naturally) 12 - You Are So Beautiful Musically speaking, children of the '70s subscribe to a tribe mentality: Former Stooges fanatics may have little in common with onetime discomaniacs at first glance, but get them together and odds are they'll bond over a mutual belief that Cliff Richard's "We Don't Talk Anymore" was, for its time, one hot track. Which is why Donny Osmond did himself a favor by recording this batch of retreads--what he loses in nostalgia points for making a disc without Marie (all these years later, there's still an element that prefers a little bit of country with its little bit of rock'n'roll), he makes up for in timeless material that, not incidentally, is very well sung. It's possible to hear Dan Hill's ever-tender "Sometimes When We Touch" here without missing Hill for a second, for instance. And because Donnie's nice-guy reputation precedes him by decades, he's a natural at putting his own sunshiny spin on Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now." If Love Songs disappoints even a sliver, it's because the title limits the song selection to disallow tracks that could have formed an equally enjoyable record: "Goofy Songs of the 70s." Suffice it to say that Leo Sayer's "When I Need You" leaves a listener with a deep hankering to hear Donnie's rendition of "You Make Me Feel Like Dancin'," too |
