Title Of Album: King Britt presents The Cosmic Lounge Volume One

    Year Of Release: 2007-07-17
    Label: BBE/Rapster
    Genre: Jazz, Spiritual Jazz
    Quality/Bitrate: MP3 / VBR kbit/s / 44.1 Khz / Joint Stereo

One of the most righteous albums to ever bear the name of King Britt -- a selection of spiritual jazz tracks from the 70s, all of which show a definite inspiration for Britt's recent work in the 21st Century! There's no remixes or remakes here -- and the collection features all original gems from a few decades back -- stretched out and cosmic grooves from some of the leading lights of the soul jazz underground in the post-Coltrane years! Most numbers are obscure tracks licensed from smaller indie labels -- brought together beautifully with a sense of depth and darkness that goes way beyond the usual King Britt groove. Titles include "Space Spy" by Grachan Moncur III, "Beyond Yourself" by Brother Ahh, "Scorpio Libra" by Eddie Henderson, "Kawaida" by Herbie Hancock, "Ekim" by Michal Urbaniak, "Yebo" by Mtume, "Conviction" by Dane Belany, "Naima" by Doug & Jean Carn, "The Time Now For Change" by Phil Ranelin, "Moving Pictures 4 The Ear" by Don Cherry, and "Encounter" by Flora Purim.

    Tracklist
    ---------------
    01. Herbie Hancock - Kawaida
    02. Michal Urbaniak Group - Ekim
    03. Mtume - Yebo
    04. Eddie Henderson - Scorpio-Libra
    05. Dane Belany - Conviction

    Release Notes:
    ----------------
One of the most righteous albums to ever bear the name of King Britt -- a selection of spiritual jazz tracks from the 70s, all of which show a definite inspiration for Britt's recent work in the 21st Century! His latest compilation, The Cosmic Lounge: A Spiritual Quest For Higher Sound, iscomprised of a number of rare and collectable Jazz tracks featuring a host of Jazz legends – Sun Ra, Flora Purim, Phil Ranelin and Don Cherry.

But you really have to be into jazz to appreciate it for this is no normal jazz album. As King Britt explains: “Jazz exists on a personal and spiritual plane for me. There’s something cosmic about the genre’s deeply African American heritage. As an original musical form rooted in instrumental improvisation, jazz is a musical conversation between creative individuals.”

Hence, the likes of Kawaida jostle for position with Eddie Henderson’s Scorpio Libra and Don Cherry’s Moving Pictures For The Ear. But they are very experimental tracks.

Hancock’s album opener Kawaida is very hard work for anyone who likes their music to conform to some kind of structure. It’s a spoken word, mystical track based around musings and a lone flute. But at over seven minutes in length, it really does test the patience. Later on, Dane Belany’s Conviction mixes tribal chanting with more traditional jazz values and a thumping percussion but, again, quickly becomes a difficult listen that’s more likely to annoy than inspire. That’s not to say the compilation isn’t without merit, for King Britt has clearly dug deep to find the 11 tracks that comprise the compilation. But it won’t win anyone over to Jazz as a music form and is really only for the connoisseur among you. I just couldn’t get into it no matter how hard I tried.

    Artist: Bruce Hornsby
    Title Of Album: Camp Meeting

Year Of Release: August 7, 2007
    Label: Sony Legacy
    Genre: Jazz
    Quality/Bitrate: MP3 / 224-256 VBR kbit/s / 44.1 Khz / Joint Stereo
    Total Time: 67:12 Min
    Total Size: 110 Mb
    WebSite: www.brucehornsby.com

Camp Meeting, from pianist/composer Bruce Hornsby, is an intermixture of pop, jazz, electronica and even swing music. Hornsby covers songs from legends like Miles Davis and Keith Jarrett, while Hornsby puts his own emblem on each song so that listeners will not be able to extract his melodies from their minds.

“Questions and Answers” was previously unrecorded by Ornette Coleman and Hornsby begins the track at a wicked fast pace right from the start. Then, percussion and drum play add to the rapidity of Hornsby’s adept piano playing. The tempo of the song might remind listeners of what it feels like to form an inquiry and then wait for a reply.

On “Solar,” Hornsby covers the Miles Davis staple with ease and he delivers this song with a slow and practiced texture. Hornsby proceeds to go up and down the musical gradation showing off his proficient instrumentation. Percussion work comes into the melody later on in the song, giving it a jazzy feel.

“Death and the Flower” is a somber cover of the Keith Jarrett ballad. As Hornsby taps away, listeners will hear the affliction which makes this a track that could be heard in a movie where a character is attending a funeral for a loved one and they are paying their final respects. The delayed instrumentation throughout, furthers the sad feeling that is expressed by this song.

On the title track, there is bounteous percussion throughout the whole song as Hornsby skillfully plays the piano. The two instruments blend together to form a seamless melody that listeners will find hard to forget. It is also a song that some will find a breeze to be-bop to as the instruments scat at times.

On “Giant Steps,” the flow is totally different as the track’s intro has techno and electronic sounds. Then, Hornsby’s quick piano work takes over, but the techno sounds continue to prevail in the background. This song could be played in a jazz club or even an electronica club, given its unique rhythm and beats.

Bruce Hornsby’s Camp Meeting is sure to be enjoyed by his longtime fans as well as admirers of many varied genres of music. Hornsby’s proclivity for mixing instruments that wouldn’t usually be used together makes this album a musical summit that listeners should not miss.

Personnel: Bruce Hornsby (piano); Jack DeJohnette (drums); Christian McBride (bass instrument).

Who knew that pianist/composer Bruce Hornsby, the popsmith of the hit "The Way it Is" and the bluegrass collaborator with Ricky Skaggs, was a jazz sleeper agent since his college days? On this 11-track recording, Hornsby's "Bill Evans-meets-the-hymnbook" pianism is buoyed by Christian McBride's brotherly-loving bass lines and Jack DeJohnette's Big Easy/Windy City drumming. The leader easily digs deep into the Negroidal rhythmic gravity we call swing. Check out the light-speed lyricism he lays down on the previously unrecorded Ornette Coleman number "Questions and Answers," the drum 'n' bass rendition of Coltrane's "Giant Steps," and the Meters-motored take on Miles Davis's "Solar." Keith Jarrett's ballad "Death and a Flower" is played with reverence and restraint, and the downbeats on Thelonious Monk's "Straight, No Chaser" and Bud Powell's "Celia" and "Un Poco Loco" don’t do injustice to their bebop roots. Hornsby keeps it rhythmically real, and he's given us a true sound of surprise. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

The Bad Plus is a collective made up of bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson, and drummer David King. All three are from the Midwest and they have known each other since their teens. Nonetheless, with the exception of one unimpressive meeting in 1990, it is only after spending their formative 20s apart -- King as a session player in Los Angeles, Iverson as the musical director for the prestigious Mark Morris Dance Group, Anderson as a prominent up-and-coming player on the New York jazz scene -- that they reunited in late 2000 to play a weekend club date in Minneapolis. The chemistry was immediate and obvious. They planned a second gig and a one-day recording session for the indie jazz label Fresh Sound and The Bad Plus was born.

Thelonious Sphere Monk was an iconoclast of the jazz community, a brilliant composer/pianist whose relentlessly quirky music has been putting smiles on people's faces long after his death. While he played with many groups through the 1940s, it wasn't until '47 that Monk began his solo odyssey. Outside the Bebop mainstream, Monk was busy concocting his own brew of witty, angular melodies with unorthodox and difficult chord progressions, and deeply swinging, Stride-influenced rhythm.

In larger combos, Monk was a brilliant, if erratic, accompanist. His approach was wildly diverse, encompassing harmonically dense riffing, startlingly dissonant counterpoint, and complete silence. He was even known to get up and dance around the piano during his bandmates' solos. Monk was also a master at choosing sidemen; on his 1957 recording Monk's Music, he placed the passionate Post Bop explorations of John Coltrane alongside the gruff proto-Swing of Coleman Hawkins. A genius of modern music, indeed. He was a highly individual piano stylist and composer whose angular, idiosyncratic swing and infectiously catchy tunes made him one of the music's most distinctive voices.
