With her first album in eight years, there seems to be little doubt that Paula Cole is aiming to shake the Sarah McLachlan-wannabe tag that has hung with her since the days of Lilith Fair. Though she rode the alternative wave during those times to her eventual notoriety, this time around Cole appears ready to paddle the mainstream. Enlisting the help of some notable, if unfamiliar, songwriters, the Massachusetts-bred singer has the striking (and professionally trained) voice to make the cut. Cole devotees will drift to a pair of ballads: the sexy, bass-driven "In Our Dreams" and "Lonely Town," a saga of isolation guided by the piano of Herbie Hancock. And while the 11 songs are cohesive enough to run as a package, cuts that stand out as potential hits include "El Greco," a declarative song of restitution, and "Hard to Be Soft," a jazz number decorated with Brazilian-themed rhythms. Whether this renewal can lead to even greater approval remains to be seen--but the audience left over from years gone by is just happy to hear Paula Cole singing again.

This recording is nothing less than a rank obscenity. Bolton has butchered (as another reviewer so aptly puts it) some of the greatest music of an era.
His temerity is only equaled by his lack of talent. Shouting, crying and growling his way painfully through standards like "My Girl", "Sexual Healing" "Tired of Being Alone" which were done as they should have greats. Forget about carrying their tunes, Bolton could not carry their suitcases.

If you remember and love these songs, this is not the album for you. While Bolton may claim that he is recording these songs in some misguided tribute to to those who came before him, this is worse than damning with even less than the faintest of praise.

At first, I though his "Whiter Shade of Pale" was a put-on. Would that it were! This is an embarassment.

I recently found this CD buried along with a pile of other old CDs which I had never played. Having read so many negative reviews about this Michael Bolton CD, I thought that I would see for myself what all the fuss was about. Well, it just goes to show you that one just can't believe everything that one hears.
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this is a pretty decent CD with a lot of great songs on it. The only jarring note was the track for "White Christmas" which just did not seem to fit with the rest of the songs on the album.

I think Michael Bolton is a pretty decent vocalist. When singing pulse pounding songs, such as "Hold On, I'm Coming" or "Bring It on Home to Me", he sounds like a mellower Tom Jones. When he sings balLads, such as "Yesterday", his somewhat scratchy vocalization is reminiscent of Rod Stewart. How bad can that be?

Billy Crystal war an dem Drehbuch von America's Sweethearts beteiligt und hat diesen Film produziert. Es handelt sich um eine gutmütige, romantische Erzählung aus dem Backstage-Milieu, mit einigen pikanten Anspielungen auf das heutige Hollywood -- wenn auch nur mit so viel Substanz wie man eben bei einem Spitzentreffen in Tinseltown erwarten kann. Wenn man dies als Ausgangspunkt und Grundlage akzeptiert hat, dann ist die Musik-Auswahl durchaus passend. Es wurde eine Sammlung von Leichtgewichten der aktuellen Popmusikszene zusammengestellt, die so homogen ist, dass man sich ernsthaft fragt, ob hier nicht ein Pasteurisierungsverfahren eingesetzt wurde.
Wenn man es dem lakonischen Meister der Gitarre Mark Knopfler ("Gravy Train") überlässt, bei diesem Album auch ausgelassenere Passagen heraus zu kitzeln, dann gehört das in diesem Umfeld aber schon zu der ernsthafteren Form von Heiterkeit. Das flotte "Some Hearts" von Kelly Levesque versucht, seinen Ton durchzusetzen, aber dann verfallen die Abläufe weitgehend in berechenbare, vorgestanzte Bahnen der Popmusik: Clara's Star's "Walk with Me", Invertigos "Chances Are", Anika Moes "Falling In Love Again" und ein überraschungsfreier Remix von "All The Love In The World" der Corrs, ein wenig allerdings gewürzt mit unerwarteten Überraschungen wie die temperamentvolle Version der ollen Kamelle "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" des Ex-Spice Girls Geri Halliwell. Die Orchesterpartitur des Veteranen James Newton Howard erhält ihren angemessenen Platz bei dem abschließenden Stück des Albums, einer Suite von gediegenen komisch-romantischen Hits.

This album is watered-down, swished-around, and nicety-split Nelly, an imitator of style yet not of spirit. But if you're really craving for some Chinese hip-hop, this might be the closest you can get without digging deep down into the underground industry. This album is decent at most - and though I thought it was atrocious at first, I must admit that I do find some of the songs occasionally getting stuck in my head.

The fast songs can be appreciated - I mean they're not good (as with many hip-hop songs), but the beats do have a way of leaving you craving for more. Sadly, the hip-hop songs in this album basically had the same beat - you don't have the variety that Jay Chou provides, nor the catchiness of American G-Funk that this album tries to imitate. While he puts house and dance influences inside the songs, they are still hip-hop.

The three ballads (tracks 3, 8, and 9) were more of a brighter spot. They wouldn't merit a list in my everyday playlist but it was enjoyable to listen to him. His vocals aren't bad, and a certain technique has him even showing emotions through his voice. The melodies were trying to be different - and while they were, they weren't that catchy either.

I didn't know where the company was trying to go with this album. It feels like they were trying to appeal to the mainstream, by imitating what's hot, but such an approach almost never works. A mixture of average beats, trying-to-stand-out melodies, and mildly-suggestive lyrics, the album is only for Vanness or hot guy fans - or for those who can appreciate Wilber Pan and his contemporaries. Definitely not for those who admire Chinese music for its innovativeness (Jay and Leehom). As another person put it - none of the songs are bad, but neither are they amazing. A mediocre album deserves a mediocre rating - 5 out of 10.

Rush is the title of the debut album from Dean Geyer. This is the first original studio album released from a 2006 Australian Idol contestant; even though Dean came third, the winner Damien Leith and runner-up Jessica Mauboy have only released compilation albums of their performances on the show so far. Rush was released on May 26. The first single lifted from the album is "If You Don't Mean It", which reached #11 on the official ARIA Charts. The second single will reportedly either be "I Don't Wanna Wait" or fan-favourite "She Comes In Waves". The album also features "I'll Be", a cover version of Edwin McCain's song that Geyer sang on Australian Idol.
