Hudson has a new track called “Spotlight”. Why in the world are people paying Stargate to make the same damn bland beat for everyone? I don’t get how JHud thinks she is going to burst onto the scene and get people excited about her new music when she is coming out with a song that 1) sounds similar to a half dozen other songs that have come out over the past year (i.e. Rihanna Take a Bow) and 2) makes her sound like Adult Top 40. I remember on American Idol when Simon criticized her for sounding too old…and the truth is he was right then and now. She has an amazing voice, but her sound is entirely too dated and not fresh enough. I would like to hear her sound her age and not like she is 40+ years old. This song isn’t bad, but this is just not a smash

The man of a million aliases (well 40+ to be precise) , Uwe Schmidt, better know to you and me as Senor Coconut, is back. You have to be pretty hard of heart (and short of humour) not to find something, somewhere on this album that doesn’t make you smile. Bossa nova covers of dance music ‘standards’ is something that he has been doing for a while now, occasionally dipping into more mainstream songs for his inspiration, and he does it very very well. It would be easy to dismiss this as novelty, but really that’s just lazy. These songs are taken apart and reconstructed with such love and attention, that it is impossible not to be charmed. There are 3 versions of Daft Punk’s Around The world on here (coincidently done recently in a jazz piano style by Christian Prommer – and much more grown up), as well as a nervous version of electro classic White Horse to name just two… Summer music doesn’t come much happier than this.

This was a big one for the Costes Franchise. Looking back - wow. It was this sort of release that made it THE compilation for those in the know... well... this and the then underrated Paris Lounge vol 1 released on the same label. You've got some great artists and mixes! 45 Dip features and there's a sweet remix of Cape Verde's Cesaria Evora's "Carnaval De Sao Vicente". If the bossa beat and taunting guitar in that don't get you dreaming of a sea breeze nothing will short of a trip to the French coast. I'm not much of a Pink Martini fan but this fit in well here. The coup though was adding in Mo' Horizons "Flyin' Away" as it is arguably the best song on their feature album: "Come Touch the Sun". Anyone else would've played it safe and added "Foto Viva". Doris Days "To Ulrike M." remixed by Zero 7 is a good start, masters of lounge De-Phazz pipe in, and before Lincoln used it, Mr. Scruff's re-jazz track "Get a Move On" came on later in the compilation. Highly recommended. Of all the Costes releases, this one and the third are the ones I play the most, and the ones I find being "borrowed" the most. It isn't without a misstep (I never much cared for Night Over Manaus). But it's hardly enough to say no to this 78 minute compilation. And if you do like the Hotel Costes Series, check Break & Bossa 5&6 and "Get Into the Martini Mood vol 1". Beware though: Costes, Des Pres Cafe and Paris/Berlin/London/New York Lounge are all on the same label. So if you get some look out for crossover cuts.
